Elmbank York

A boutique Art Nouveau hotel in historic York. Minutes from the heart of the city, overlooking the Knavesmire Strays, lies the Elmbank Hotel, a unique 19th-century mansion with a rich history. Redesigned by Mackintosh contemporary, George Walton, the Elmbank hotel is home to one of the finest and most complete Art Nouveau collections in the UK. Here, impressive stained-glass, beautiful murals, and detailed stencils meld with modern and sophisticated facilities to provide a space of style, comfort, and interest. York’s ancient city walls can be reached in just 10 minutes’ walk, with a further 5 to 10 minutes’ walk taking guests to the historic attractions, including the spectacular York Minster. Alternatively there is a bus stop outside the hotel, and from there a bus in to town takes 3 minutes. York Railway Station is just a 10-minute walk or few minutes by car, and the Elmbank has limited parking. There is also a bus stop near the hotel, with sightseeing tours going in to town. York Racecourse is a few minutes' away.

Great location, comfy bed

Pros: The bed! Would have liked a bath in my room and I think we were given the dog rooms.

Cons: Couldn’t find switch to spotlights in the room, the room didn’t have a bath and the heating had its own timer which came on in the middle of the night which was quite noisy

Perfect from check in to check out

Pros: We stayed as a couple for my boyfriend’s birthday and we couldn’t have chosen a better place to stay for our visit to York. Our room was so stunning, spotlessly clean and decorated beautifully, the hotel itself is gorgeous and such a short walk to the city centre and train station. The staff from check in to check out were so friendly and helpful. We will 100% be back in the future, cannot fault a single thing.

Cons: N/A

Lovely short stay in York with family.

Pros: Staff and the feel of the hotel.. Staff were lovely, decor is fabulous!

Cons: Cooked breakfast could be better, the bacon is dry and no options given when unable to eat mushrooms and beans.

Good value for money but breakfast and bar service and choice a huge disappointment

Pros: Room was spacious and clean with a lovely large bed. The staff in the restaurant and reception were very pleasant.

Cons: Food and beverage offerings were way below the standard of the hotel. Cooked breakfast was poor and badly presented. Bar was inadequate with just one draft lager offering which ran out..... lack of staff in this area, which led to long delays and frustrated customers. Virtually all of the wines on the list were unavailable the first night and worst still on the second. This was a ridiculous situation and totally unacceptable. Evening meal was just adequate, which meant we only did the one night. They really need to address these issues as it lets down what is otherwise a nice hotel. We would stay again and believe the management have picked up on this.

We were happy and comfortable in a very pleasant hotel in a convenient location in a wonderful city

Pros: We liked the room and the hotel generally. It was very cosy, clean and well decorated

Cons: I didn’t like the sound of the air conditioning, while trying to sleep, although my wife was not disturbed by this

A lovely hotel with friendly staff, we'd definitely stay again.

Pros: The room was a good size, comfy and warm, there was a very clean bathroom with plenty of toiletries provided. We slept well in the very large bed and we were pleased to have a safe facility and also a small fridge. Breakfast was a bit pricey at £20 / head per day but there was a decent selection of cereals etc. and the full English breakfast provided a good start to the day. Buses into the city centre run on a regular basis and the stop is only 2 minute's walk from the hotel - so don't forget your bus pass !

Cons: Parking at the hotel is limited and expensive at £18/night , there are parking facilities at the neighbouring school but they are also £18/night.

Pros: We stayed in the court yard behind the main hotel and it was very nice and spacious. Great parking rite next to the room. Staff were very nice and helpful. Had a nice drink in the bar as we were early for check in. Good location.

Cons: The ploughman's lunch sandwich we had in the bar was made with a cheese slice and no pickle on it so not really a ploughman's sandwich but other than that nothing to complain about. Dident get up for breakfast so cant comment on that but really enjoyed the stay.

Old, charming and cosy hotel

Pros: The hotel is in a stunning old building which gave us the old York feeling - beautiful old wood panelling and large rooms. The breakfast was lovely. The staff in the evening were accommodating with drinks being able to use the main foyer for quiet time. The rooms were clean and quiet.

Cons: We had asked for rooms near each other but they weren't (wasn't a big deal in the end). There is no lift/elevator and we had to carry our luggage up stairs and along hallways - again not a big deal but worth knowing. Not in the centre of town, but an easy 25 min walk into the centre of York.

Classic architecture!

Pros: Perfect art nouveau building with comfortable rooms and a great breakfast. Years ago I chose this hotel for some colleagues visiting from London, was struck by the wonderful fireplaces in the bar, and now finally I have stayed there myself as well.
